About Machu Picchu
Perched high in the Peruvian Andes at 2,430 meters above sea level, Machu Picchu is a masterpiece of ancient engineering, blending perfectly with the surrounding landscape.
Built in the mid-15th century, it is believed to have been the royal estate and spiritual retreat of Inca Emperor Pachacútec. The site’s precise stone masonry and harmonious design reflect the Incas’ profound understanding of astronomy, architecture, and nature.
After the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire in the 16th century, Machu Picchu was never discovered by the invaders and remained hidden for nearly four centuries beneath thick jungle vegetation. In 1911, during his expedition in search of the Inca’s last stronghold Vilcabamba, Hiram Bingham was guided by local farmer Melchor Arteaga to the site.
As Bingham climbed through the steep trails and misty forest, he emerged onto the mountaintop to behold vast terraces, temples, and walls — the legendary lost city revealed once again.
